When considering a Real-Time PCR instrument
four (4) major components need to be assessed:

  • Thermal system
  • Optical System
  • Software
  • Additional components

Helixis, headquartered in Carlsbad, California, develops innovative nucleic acid tools for research applications. The company was founded in 2007 through a unique collaboration between molecular biologists and engineers in the labs of Nobel Laureate David Baltimore, Ph.D., and Axel Scherer, Ph.D., at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).  The company’s first commercial product, PIXO™,
is a Real-Time PCR System designed for individual
researcher use. The instrument combines
a proprietary 48-well thermal system, a robust
optical system that supports 4-dye mutiplexing,
and high value research applications like
High Resolution Melt (HRM).

The PIXO™ Real-Time PCR system provides DNA amplification capabilities that are above industry standards for temperature control and thermal uniformity.

The enhanced thermal performance improves overall data quality and reproducibility. In addition, high value applications such as High Resolution Melt curve analysis are enabled.
Thermal uniformity is the most important performance parameter for all Real-Time PCR applications
  • Ensures reproducibility between samples, replicates and runs performed on different days.
  • Precise temperature control and thermal uniformity enables high performance applications such as High Resolution Melt.
The system is a completely open chemistry platform supporting all available real time PCR chemistries and capable of multiplexing up to four dyes in a single tube.

The optical system combines two fixed solid-state LED systems for excitation and four detection filters combined with a CCD camera for detection.
The system includes a computer pre-installed with PIXO™ system software. The computer communicates with the instrument through an ethernet connection. A USB flash drive, pre-loaded with analysis software, protocols, and application notes, is included for transferring data and template files.

The software includes an unlimited number of software licenses and can be easily upgraded via the Internet. It uses an intuitive user interface that simplifies plate layout and thermal profile editing. Various template files are included that contain default cycling protocols for various applications and new protocols can be downloaded from the Helixis website.

  • Simplified interface, extensively tested with scientists
  • Icons and “smart defaults” simplify learning curve
  • Supports all applications and chemistries, including HRM

The system includes an LED illuminated docking station that assists sample loading into the custom 48-well plate. Plate adapters are included for use in standard centrifuge plate holders.
  • Dock can be adjusted up to 45° for comfortable and accurate pippetting
  • LED backlight highlights well labels
  • As each sample is added, backlight creates additional contrast to differentiate wells with reagents from empty wells
